Checking your roof for damage regularly is essential for keeping it safe and sturdy. This article is about what you should look for, and what to check for, when inspecting a roof.

As an experienced roofing contractor, we have seen, repaired and replaced many roofs and have several tips for you. They are sure to come in handy next time you inspect your roof.

The first thing to do, when examining for any needs for a roof repair, is get a pair of binoculars and inspect it from a safe distance. Avoid climbing the roof unless it’s necessary. It’s better if you leave the climbing to a professional roofer. Shingles and other roofing materials are usually fragile and you can sometimes damage them. That’s another reason why, climbing the roof is something that should be done as rarely as possible.

Man fixing his roofAll roofs are exposed to heavy rains, scorching sun, strong winds and destructive hail. Eventually even the best shingles wear out. A roof in need of an emergency roof repair is likely to show the following symptoms: cracked caulk or spots of rust; damaged shingles – buckling, curling, or blistering; worn out areas around chimneys, pipes, or skylights. If you see pieces of colored grit from the shingles in the gutters, that means the asphalt of your shingles is getting a lot of wear and should call a roofing contractor to have a look at it. Other signs include black algae, moss, mildew and lichen. If you see any of those, that means your roof is decaying and needs an emergency roof repair.

As for any loose, damaged or missing shingles, those should be taken care of as soon as possible. Otherwise you risk a leak inside your home. For places with a lot of wind, be sure to check for popped nails and loose shingles.

Make sure all skylights are not damaged in any way and don’t need recaulking. Check the chimney for cracks and gaps. Don’t forget to inspect the chimney cap as well.

If you find any of those signs, it may be time to call a roofer.
